These two contrasting sketches supposedly depict the same part of the battle on the second day—the union repulse of the Confederate drive to take Little Round Top and destroy Meade’s left. One picture is of the traditional “picture-book” school, grotesquely unreal, showing orderly ranks of Union troops advancing behind a general who rides valiantly in front waving a flag. The other picture comes much closer to realism, showing the Confederates advancing up the littered hillside by twos and threes and squads, taking cover behind rocks and trees, fighting in a smoky fog in which no parade-ground battle lines were ever visible.
